Congress Faces a Historic Opportunity to Deliver Transformative Immigration Relief
By Evangel Penumaka
The House of Representatives faces a vote on the Build Back Better reconciliation bill, which includes historic immigration relief for millions of undocumented immigrants. New Data for Progress polling of 559 likely voters nationally finds overwhelming bipartisan support for providing Dreamers and other undocumented immigrants the ability to earn a work permit and receive protection from deportations.
We find that a strong majority, 75 percent, of likely voters support this proposal, with enthusiastic support from Democrats and Independents. Eighty-eight percent of Democrats and 81 percent of Independents support providing immigration relief to Dreamers and undocumented immigrants. The proposal also has the backing of Republican likely voters by a +19-point margin.
If passed, the reconciliation bill’s immigration provisions — which have the backing of likely voters across parties — will change the lives of immigrants who have contributed to communities across the U.S. for years but continue to face uncertainty. In this pivotal moment, it is crucial that Congress delivers transformative relief to millions of immigrant families.
