Voters Increasingly View Abortion as a Top Priority
By Bella Kumar
As we all know, on May 2 a draft of the Supreme Court’s majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health leaked. This opinion would effectively overturn Roe v. Wade and put abortion access and reproductive healthcare at immediate risk. New polling by Data for Progress shows that abortion access is still on voters’ radars.
In a national survey of likely voters conducted from May 11 to 16, the percentage of voters who view abortion as a top priority rose from the same survey conducted from April 11 to 18. In the April survey, 11 percent of voters cited abortion as a top priority, including 11 percent of Democrats, 11 percent of Independents, and 12 percent of Republicans. In the survey that concluded May 16, after the Supreme Court opinion leak, 17 percent of voters view abortion as a top priority, including 20 percent of Democrats, 16 percent of Independents, and 16 percent of Republicans.
It is clear that voters are increasingly concerned about their access to abortion in the aftermath of the Supreme Court draft opinion leak.
