Voters — Especially Young Ones — Want Biden to Keep Fighting to Cancel Student Loan Debt

This week, a federal judge extended a temporary pause on President Joe Biden’s student debt forgiveness plan. The plan aims to forgive student debt for borrowers who owe more than they took out, those who have been paying back their loans since at least 2005, those who are eligible for forgiveness but haven’t applied yet, and those who enrolled in “low-financial-value” schools.

New Data for Progress polling, fielded last week, finds a majority of voters say that Biden should “continue fighting to cancel student loan debt,” including 69% of voters under 45. Only 24% of voters under 45 disagree.

The results mirror Data for Progress polling from March 2024, which found that 58% of voters overall and 75% of voters under 45 supported canceling student debt. However, as of March, only 39% of voters under 45 had heard “a lot” from Biden about the issue.

Also, last September, Data for Progress polling found that 61% of voters with student loan debt were not confident they would be able to make their monthly payments, indicating that student loan debt forgiveness could bring significant relief to current borrowers.
